Water Work Shop

This summer NCS kicks off the training season with a two hour workshop with NCS members. The training will be for the basic stages needed to get started on training your Newfoundland to complete a Water Dog (WD) title for the Newfoundland Club of America water test. This basic stage includes studying and understanding the behavior of dog and handler, the receptiveness of basic commands, basic obedience, familiarization with the training environment and simple exercises such as retrieve using a bumper. Upon completion of this workshop you will have the basics to begin training your Newfoundland dog for the water season. In addition, training groups meet throughout the summer to help each other attain training goals.

You will have the basic skills, etiquette, and know what your equipment needs are so that you can feel confident to join a group.

1. 9: 00 am – Introductions

2. 9:15 – NCS training and boat policy at Nolte State Park

3. 9:30 – Review basic equipment, basic commands, basic etiquette and safety

4. 10:15 – Move to stations (land training) a. Discover what kind of handler team you are: Elizabeth

b. Practice commands: Land training techniques to reinforce exercises. Some useful commands for training water dog (Elizabeth/others)

c. Take, hold, retrieve and give: Learn the basics and some tips (Lanelle if available)

5. 11:00 – Help put away equipment and wrap-up

Please bring the following gear for the safety of your dog and yourself:

Safety Equipment list:

• Appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather.

• Leash and collar for the dog

• Water for your dog and family. Even if the weather is cool, your dog will need lots of clean water to drink.

• Training equipment and dog treats or toys that you will use during training

• Sun screen

• X-pens or crates – you will need to keep your dog safe when you are helping others or not working with them
