The Newfoundland Dog Health Resource Center...

As with any breed of dogs, some Newfs experience certain health problems. Several of these problems exists within the Newfoundland gene pool. Most responsible breeders screen potential breeding stock for these disorders, however, no amount of genetic testing is absolutely foolproof, and perfectly sound parents can produce a puppy with a health problem.

When you are selecting a puppy, please be sure to ask the breeder what health problems their stock has been screened for, and what type of health guarantee is in their contract.
The Newfoundland Club of America is working hard to address genetic/health problems in our breed. For more information on this program visit:

THE NEWFOUNDLAND CLUB OF AMERICA ALSO ENCOURAGES ALL BREEDERS TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES ABOUT GENETIC DISEASE AND TO UTILIZE REGISTRIES TO SHARE HEALTH INFORMATION WITH OTHER BREED FANCIERS
