True Stories of Heroic
Newfoundlands
|
The
Wreck of the Ethie
Hillary Hyland
In 1919, just before Christmas, the S.S. Ethie departs
Port Saunders, Newfoundland, for St. John's Harbor with 92 passengers
and crew, all eager to be reunited with family for the holidays.
After several difficult days at sea, a violent winter storm casts
the coastal steamer Ethie onto rocks one-half mile off the jagged
cliffs of northwest Newfoundland. Guided by his fisherman master,
and following his own instincts, Skipper, a hardworking and courageous
Newfoundland dog, braves the icy, dangerous waters to carry a
lifeline from the sinking ship to shore. A seat is rigged to this
cable, which carries each person onboard to safety. All 92 passengers
and crew were saved from probable death in the icy Atlantic waters
by the actions of this brave dog.
In this minute-by-minute fictionalized account of the S.S. Ethie's
dramatic voyage, the author vividly brings the adventure to life,
showing the spirit of survival amongst the passengers and crew,
as well as the strength and determination of a poor fishing family
and their courageous dog to save those 92 souls.

Hero of the Isle aux Morts
by Alice Walsh
Anne Harvey has lived all her young life on the island off the
rugged coast of Newfoundland and has seen what the raging storms
can do to helpless ships caught in their path. It’s no surprise
that Isle aux Morts means Island of the Dead.
One day in July 1832, Anne awakes to a terrible storm. When she
hears a distress signal, she discovers a ship in danger of breaking
up. As she and her father and brother race to the ship in their
own small boat, Anne has an idea. She sends her Newfoundland dog,
Hairy Man, into the waves toward the ship and the only real hope
of rescue. Based on the true story of the wreck of the Despatch.
A book with special appeal to those who know and love gentle Newfoundland
dogs.

Emma
and the Night Dogs,
Susan Bivin Aller
Grade 1-3
A very young boy runs, panicked, lost in the dark
woods, while a little girl, Emma, is safe and warm at home. Her
Aunt Alice arrives at the house with the search dogs and their
owners who need to rest for a few hours. But the girl is haunted
by the thought of a tiny boy alone in the dark. She slips out
of the house, calls softly to the dogs, and continues the search
by herself. Aller effectively switches the point of view back
and forth from the lost child to the secure one, dark to light,
danger to safety. The dogs are the center of the story. In a foreword,
the author describes the work of the Canine Search and Rescue
service. Backer's oil paintings are suitably murky, encouraging
feelings of shivery dread. The artist depicts the giant black
Newfie, Juno, standing and looking at readers calm, confident,
and wise- an elegant savior. |

Sailor: The Hangashore Newfoundland
Sailor was afraid to go into the water. A Newfoundland afraid
of the water? Preposterous! All the kids made fun of Sailor,
until one day, Sailor found good reason to take the plunge,
and, in true Newfie character and glory, save his boy from drowning!
What else could a Newf do??
|

The Lighthouse Dog ,
Betty Waterton
Dean Griffiths, the illustrator, has done an incredible
job depicting both the nobility and the potential goofiness
of this breed! The story is very funny (although there is a
harrowing rescue at the end) about an overgrown puppy adopted
by an older lighthouse captain and his wife. The "puppy"
proves to be a great deal of trouble because of his enthusiasm
and his insecurity (he tries to send the lighthouse cat away
because he's worried the people like the cat better) until he
shows his true colors in a daring rescue during a storm. A fantastic
book with a lot of whimsy and sincerity.

Old Dog Cora &
The Christmas Tree
Consie Powell
Handsome, slightly nostalgic woodcuts render a sweet story about
an old dog who refuses to be put out to pasture. Cora accompanies
the family as usual to cut down the Christmas tree, but this year
she's not harnessed with the other dogs to haul it home. "You're
getting too creaky to pull a heavy load," she's toldAbut
she finds a way to prove her worth. Crisp evergreens, white snow
and bright red and blue accents offer a striking contrast to the
bold black lines of the woodcuts.

The
Angel of Mill Street
Frances Ward Weller
The narrative has the rhythm and pacing of oral
storytelling. On each double-page spread, the text is set in a
narrow vertical strip next to a large illustration. Two wordless,
double-page illustrations at the climax add to the meticulous
structure of the book. Blake's watercolors, with the blue hues
of the outside set against the yellow hues of indoors and the
increasingly obscuring and wind-blown snow, add nicely to this
cozy and old-fashioned Christmas story. |

Newf,
Marie Killea
Kindergarten-Grade 2 Killilea's admiration for Newfoundlands
clearly shines through in this story based on a legend from the
Gaspe Peninsula. The haunting illustrations, as well as the fact
that no humans enter into the picture, add to the mysterious mood
and the book's intrigue.
