Obedience Work

You’ll often find Newfoundlands demonstrating their intelligence and willingness to work in obedience competitions. Obedience is a sport that demonstrates the usefulness of a dog as a companion to humankind. Dog and handler teams are judged on how closely they match the judge’s mental picture of a theoretically perfect performance as they execute a series of specified exercises. Accuracy and precision are essential, but the natural movement of the handler and the willingness and enjoyment of the dog are very important.

AKC Obedience Titles:

CDX – companion dog excellent
UD – utility dog
In addition to these titles, the AKC also offers a number of optional titling classes. For dogs and handlers who really excel, titles like Utility Dog Excellent (UDX) and Obedience Master (OM) are offered.
